The British East India Company (EIC) began smuggling Indian opium to China and became the leading supplier of opium by 1773, overtaking the Portuguese. ![]() This opium trade led to two Opium Wars between the Chinese Qing empire and the British empire. China was wrecked by illegal opium trade sponsored by the British empire - it surreptitiously exported opium grown in India and sold it in China - in the 19th century. ![]() We are grappling with serious drug abuse crisis and the source of drugs largely is the Golden Crescent, comprising Afghanistan and Pakistan besides Iran. I was struck by the accuracy of this statement as I looked for parallels in history for our current drug crisis.
